Logan Simich-Burr
I have been drawing and doodling since about 4 or 5 yrs of age and have filled over 50 scrapbooks with 1000s of drawings and art pieces ranging from cartoon animation, animals, still life, self portraits, clay sculpture and much more. I love using my imagination and being creative with colour, this motivates me to be expressive through doing and becoming a part of my work. I have been involved with artwork on murals which are up at The Art Lab on the Whangaparaoa Hall walls as well as the murals on the outside of Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa.
I won my first competition through the New Zealand Association for Gifted Children (NZAGC) at age 8yrs where I entered a sketch of Jack Sparrow, and I have been successful in other competitions including cartoon animation at Arkham City Comics, The Hibiscus and Bays Arts awards x3 times and in the Kaipara Arts Awards. I took part in the Mangawhai Resene Stingray Mural project 2017 at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery and donated an art chair (Ghost Rider) in 2018 to raise money ($75) for a great cause and initiative for the 'Fire Up fundraiser' to build the new Fire Station in Mangawhai.
I was happy to donate a huge mural to #plasticfreemangawhai to help spread the word of getting rid of single use plastic items and looking after our environment. This mural won 1st place in 2018 art competition for my age-group in the NZAGC (you can view my mural at Wood Street).
In 2019 I donated an art chair called, 'Dragon Tales' that I created using mixed media, for a fundraiser for Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa andI continue to use various mediums for my art including canvases, plywood, clay, wire, paints, oils ,acrylics, Gesso, pastels, ink pens, sponges, paint pens, spray paint and more and this year has been busy doing more art with patterns, sculpting, and stencils. I hope to have an exhibition at a couple of galleries over the next year and begin turning some of my art into 3D artworks using a 3D printer.
I have had art classes with Anna Evan's at The Art Lab for over 7 years as well as Susannah Murray from Estuary Arts and Claire Benson from B-Creative in Mangawhai. I had the opportunity to help out at Meraki Montessori school in Silverdale, teaching and helping some of the younger children plan their own art sessions and draw animation characters....this was so much fun!
To date I have been very lucky to have been published in Toitoi: A journal for young writers and artists 7 times as well as the incredible hardcover book called 'The Jillion'.
Please checkout www.toitoi.nz to see my art from Lockdown Covid -19, in the, 'From my window' art iniative as well as my video.
We would like to thank Toitoi, Charlotte, Grace and all the staff for supporting my art and other young artists/writers and having this wonderful platform to publish artworks /poems/stories in the toitoi journals. We know these special journals inspire kids from around the country to be comfortable in their own skin and to never stop creating art, pictures, writing poems, stories and songs while having fun & being creative every day. I will be working on my new art calendar, set of Christmas cards and plain cards that you can purchase. Come follow my journey on fb/instagram and website.
