Daphne Davies
Art has been Daphne's passion since her early schooldays, studying it as a subject in Secondary school, and continuing it ever since, while she has built a parallel career as a Primary school teacher. Initially studying at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town, she and her family moved to New Zealand in 1988, and she has subsequently studied under a number of inspirational New Zealand artists.
Her art has been a key part of her work as a teacher, using illustrations to assist her students to grasp new concepts. Her specialist area of expertise is in Special Education, in which she has a post-graduate qualification, and where she has found the additional dimension provided by art to be invaluable in assisting her students through the learning process.
As an artist she has undertaken a journey exploring a variety of media, such as pottery, screenprinting, painting, pastels, ink, and charcoal. For her subjects she draws her inspiration from the natural world, reflecting on its strength, as well as its vulnerability.
Daphne has been a regular exhibitor in Mangawhai over the years – she and her husband first fell in love with the district when visiting their daughter who was camping at the Estuary for a rowing camp fifteen years ago, and they have never looked back, now splitting their time between Mangawhai and Auckland.
