Rebecca Barclay Clist
“Creativity in all its various forms has been a constant through my life and always will be”.
Rebecca Barclay-Clist, who lives and works in Northland, regularly exhibits in solo and group exhibitions within New Zealand and she supplies a couple of NZ galleries with her artworks.
Her most recent exhibition, November (2019) at Mangawhai Artists Gallery, was titled SEVEN INTENTIONS / SEVEN DISTRACTIONS. She is explored ideas based on the 7 days of creation and the 7 deadly sins, looking at God's intention Vs mans distraction, through a Vanitas lens.
Since committing to a professional art practice in 2014, she has had a solo show each year and has caught the eye of buyers locally and abroad.
Growing up in Dunedin Rebecca saw original works of McCahon, Clairmont, Monet and Bonnard. The colour and light impressions made by paint; dots, flicks, spots, flashes, heavy layers and highlights fascinated her, and later influenced her work. Impressionism, Expressionism and abstract works with impasto and gestural elements suggesting life, chance, mistakes, vitality and individuality excite her and have been part of her explorations in expression. Her art practice focuses primarily on painting and drawing.
Today Rebecca is the senior art instructor and the head of the art faculty at a Northland high school. She resides in Mangawhai where she has a studio and works regularly preparing for exhibitions and preparing work for the various galleries she supplies within New Zealand.
Painting statement: My paintings have evolved from the traditions of portraiture, but are now far from representing just one person. Because of my faith in God, I am always seeking to value people, humankind and the individual - my work will always relate to humanity in some way. Understanding the complexities of humanity will take a lifetime of exploration and will change and develop through the way society changes and processing that information through media.”
