Robert Looker

Robert was born in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. While Robert’s high school art teacher had encouraged him to pursue a fine art practice, he instead chose a creative career in advertising, eventually working in Auckland and Sydney.
Predominantly a self-taught artist, Robert has been mentored by Australian artist and National Art School tutor Roger Crawford, and completed workshops with leading artists Lucy Culliton, David Fairbain, Barbie Kjar and Euan McLeod. A figurative artist, Robert’s paintings explore themes of home and belonging, ownership and our presence in the landscape. His painting is described as abstract expressionist with recurring symbols. |
Robert paints mostly from memory and in ‘the moment’, often approaching a painting without any preconceived vision - just a recollection of a place, event, or time.
Robert has exhibited in Sydney and Auckland and has been a finalist in some of Sydney’s leading art prizes. Robert’s work is held in private collections in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, UK, and Seychelles. In 2015, Robert retired from advertising and returned to live in Auckland. He currently lives and works between Auckland and Mangawhai.
