Linda Gilbert

Painting: acrylic and digital
Linda Gilbert moved to Kaiwaka from Wellington in late 2019.
Originally from Auckland, Linda has painted since she was old enough to dip her curious fingers into paint pots. When she was 5 her mother wrote: “Linda has just come home with about a gross of paintings to show me, pony-tails undone and a glove hanging out of each pocket.”
Linda creates vibrant, abstract art using acrylic paint, digital media and printmaking processes. Layers are built up as she switches between analogue and digital tools, responding to the work as it evolves. Figure-ground relationships push and pull the eye through space and time, playing with ideas of perception.
Canvas is often the surface of choice, but the substrate can change and sometimes paintings become sculptures.
Edges (literal and metaphorical), the environment, and equity are concepts of recurring interest.
Linda holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in painting from AUT University (2018). She is also a qualified lawyer, having worked in community law and social policy.
In 2019 Linda was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Painting Awards, the Walker and Hall Painting Awards and recipient of the Paul Klein Artist Works Southern Scholarship.
