Mike Hooton
Mike Hooton lives on the Kaipara Harbour working from his home studio 'Magpie Art Studio'
He took his first class when he was 16 years old and 30 yrs later he is still playing in mud.
Mike loves the chemistry involved with making all of his own glazes, and occasionally clay bodies as there is always an element of surprise when you open the kiln door. Gas firing in oxidation and reduction Mike predominately makes functional ware that he supplies several boutique stores across New Zealand.
Though the majority of his pieces are thrown on the wheel, recently he has been immersing himself back into hand built sculptural pieces.
In his duo exhibition ( Unearthed - Sep 2020 ) with partner artist Laura Worrall, Mike created a body of work reflecting his other passion, Mycology, where he explored the fascinating world of fungi and both the history and current integration within cultures.
