Tracey Coakley
Painting
Tracey Coakley has been creating art since she was a child, growing up in Melbourne. During an art folio course in 2000 she fell in love with oils, and has been painting since. As a mature aged student, she completed a Diploma of Visual arts at CAE in Melbourne 2005-6, majoring in painting. She moved to Auckland in 2007, but as early as 2022, she now lives in Waipu, where she resides in a tiny home with her husband and three kids. What she loves about oil paint is its versatility, it offers her the luxury of time so that she can blend on the actual canvas itself, while it is wet. She discovered a passion for mixing her own colours, under the tutor of her diploma painting teacher Prudence Flint, who really made an impact of the importance of mixing your own colour, not just from a tube. Tracey’s narrative work is inspired by emotions, family and friends that surround her, and watching her children grow; using herself and her family as models to paint from. Predominantly figurative and painted portraits in a realism style. |
With ideas, props, and models, she sets a scene and takes photos, which she then uses as reference material to paint from. Painting in layers, it can take up to 3 or 4 coats till she gets the desired result, whether its skin tone or fabrics, and to be as smooth as possible with as little visible paint brush strokes. She uses glazing technique for shading and variation. While she’s working, often listens to a mix of music, and podcasts.
Tracey has exhibited in Melbourne, Adelaide, Auckland and throughout New Zealand in various group and solo shows since 2002, and painting full time since 2017. She was a finalist in the Cleveland National Art Awards 2019 & 2021 (special mention), Arts Gold Award 2019, Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Awards 2020 & 2021. And won the Outstanding Artist award for the 6th Hibiscus and Bays Art Awards 2019, Kumeu Art Awards 2020 (supreme Winner) & 2021 (2nd place).
