Jeanette Vickers
Photography
Jeanette has always chased different entities to photograph. Always in the back of her mind was a thing about abstract art. She mined artists like, Kandinsky, Miro, and Pollock, but couldn’t find away clear.
She wanted to photograph what the eye could not see, in part to show the world what was on their doorsteps, but was outside of their awareness. 14 years ago she photographed fungi, 2000 photographs and 4 years later she needed to move on.
Jeanette dabbled a little with nature’s quirks and constructs, mostly with a macro lens, but this did not hold her interest for long.
Jeanette then found water, the sea, and did a large body of work, showing water ripples morphing into different shapes and colours depending on wind, tides, and bow waves of boats. These were done in Picnic Bay, Mangawhai, from down the hill where she lives.
It wasn’t until early 2016 she found what she had been looking for all those years ago. A process that would allow her to produce abstract patterns and forms and at the same time maintaining the vibrant colours, she had become to be recognized for.
Jeanette draws, paints, patterns upon glass and using water, sprays the glass until she gets the photographs she wants. Again her art work on the glass only lasts about 10 mins, so she has to work very quickly to take the photographs as they are morphing and changing. Which is what you see in this body of work here today.
She has exhibited widely, Mangawhai Artists Gallery, Mangawhai Art Trails, Matakohe Museum – Kaipara Art Awards (winning a first in 2011 for her photograph ‘Wave Collision’) Reyburn House - Whangarei, Mairangi Arts Centre, Estuary Arts Centre - Orewa, Hamilton Art Show, In Spirit Gallery Hamilton, and Whanganui – the Yellow House.
Many of her art photographs are in private collections, SI NZ, Australia, Canada, USA, England and Austria. Two years ago her art work was featured on TV one ‘This Town’ which you can see on demand TV.
Jeanette always has her artwork at her home 60 Wintle St, Mangawhai. Please ring 431 5668 for an appointment. If she has been doing a large amount of photography she may have also have some photographs she can show you from her computer as well.
Jeanette only prints one of each photograph. Her photographs are printed on archival canvas and inks. (Fine art or Giclee prints). They are stretched over a wooden frame and are ready to hang. In later times she has been framing the larger sizes to ensure non stretching of canvas and buckling that can occur in sizes up to and over 1 metre.
Jeanette welcomes visitors at any time during the year by appointment at 60 Wintle St, Mangawhai.
