Mel Juer
Painting
Mel grew up in the Namib Desert in Southern Africa, and started to draw life around her from an early age. She studied Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, Michaelis Art School and moved to the UK in her early 20s. There she did many other things; setting up a software business, becoming a wife and mum, and taking on sailing and climbing the Himalayas amongst other adventures. She continued to draw and paint with inks and watercolours in her spare time.
In 2012 Mel immigrated to New Zealand, and after children left home and went on to build their lives, she re-committed to painting in oils, acrylics and inks. Mel has an expressive, colourful style with a love for drawing as well as painting. Her work is inspired by the landscape around her, as well as contemporary artists such as David Hockney and Mamma Andersson.
Mel was awarded an Emerging Artist award in the Kaipara Art Awards 2019, and exhibits in the Mangawhai Gallery and Kings Theatre Gallery in Kawakawa. Mel is also a podcast host for Change JAM.
