The concept of a Community Arts Centre in Mangawhai comes from extensive public consultation and feedback. It will bring to life the vision of recreational, arts and cultural activities in the Mangawhai Community Park, as envisaged in the Master Plan adopted by Council.
The proposed new-build Mangawhai Community Arts Centre will serve the communities of surrounding areas as a venue to showcase creative talent and it will become a central site for learning, inspiration, workshops, courses, exhibitions and events. The purposes of the Community Arts Centre are relevant to community members of all ages.
There is unmet demand for courses and classes as community space is limited at present. The current small gallery has been extremely well patronised by exhibiting artists and by local and tourist visitors. It is common to have over 300 visitors on Saturdays, and visitors spread over each week. Since it opened in 2015 over 8,000 visits have been made to the Gallery.
The proposed new Community Arts Centre within The Pioneer Village site encompasses the ideas and preferences of design workshop participants. The design of this building is influenced by its siting within The Pioneer Village, so the roof line and structure are in keeping with the heritage buildings now located on this site. The materials and visual impression address the need for rural pioneer aesthetic while providing for a robust, low-maintenance building suited to wide public use over a long lifespan into the future. The building footprint of 10m x 20m has a flexible interior suited to gallery space and is enhanced by a verandah surround and ramp access for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility aids. The total footprint is 22.2m x 11.6m. Plans and a briefing are available from the development group of the Committee. Colours in the images are provisional only, as the final colourways will be agreed in keeping with other structures in The Pioneer Village. This is adjacent to the Museum. The design includes a dedicated sculpture area at the rear of the proposed building.
