Mixing Colours (Acrylics, Oils)
Sunday 8 September 2024

Sunday 8 September 2024
10.00am - 3.00pm

Tutor: Elena Nikolaeva
Cost:  $65
Number limit:  10

Being artists, we must keep up and improve our painting skills constantly. To find a colour you need is one of the most difficult issues in the painting process.

Contemporary art market provides countless different colours of paints. It's just impossible to buy all of them! Besides, the more colours you use, the harder it is to achieve visual harmony.

So how can we get the colours we need? What are the rules of mixing pigments? When is it better to follow these rules and when can we break them?

What we will cover:
  • You will find answers to these questions and more in this workshop.
  • You will explore the most important characteristics of colours: temperature, saturation, value.
  • You will learn how to change the value of a colour without changing its tone.
  • You will experiment with your own personal paints to find out their character and their behaviour. Each brand of paint is different!

During this class you will do an exercise on primed paper, mixing colours. Using your new knowledge, you will paint a picture on canvas.

Sunday 24  March 2024
10.30am – 2.30pm
Tutor: Christine Harris
Cost:  $95.00
Number limit: 5

This workshop is an introduction to the ancient craft of water marbling: painting on water and transferring your image from water to paper. This is a fun and colourful process which can be used for other creative activities such as textiles, collages, digital design, scrapbooking etc.

Material costs are included, just bring
an apron or wear old clothes, and bring refreshments and lunch.

If you'd like to attend, please email Christine to register and for more information at
[email protected] or text mobile 0274903625

Marbling is known in Turkey as Ebru, in Japan as Suminagashi and in Italy it is called  Florentine Paper. It has been used for many centuries by bookbinders and has been kept a secret also for many centuries by the chosen few who practice it.

Christine calls herself a 'rogue marbler' - "I start off by using the traditional techniques and methods to develop images such as my ‘garden-like' paintings which the public see a sort of resemblance to.  Also I make quite abstract decorative patterns for my paper collages."

Tutor:
Elena Nikolaeva
Cost: $55
Group: 10 people

Content: Being artists, we must keep up and improve our painting skills constantly. To find a colour you need is one of the most difficult issues in the painting process. Green palette is one of the most important and wide used palettes among the artists. There are dozens of various green paints which art suppliers can provide. Do we need to buy all of them to create a harmonious and attractive painting? If not, how can we get the paints we need? Maybe we may widen our green palette making our own greens? Green is a secondary colour anyway; it’s made from mixing primary colours – blue and yellow. In this workshop you will find answers to these questions and more. You will learn how to mix a wide range of green colours using your different blues, yellows and blacks. During this workshop you will do an exercise on primed paper, mixing colours and organising your greens in “Green Colour Wheel”. Using your new knowledge, you will paint a landscape using only blues, yellows, blacks and white paints.

Acrylics (or oils): all yellow paints you have, all blue paints you have including yellow ochre, black, payns grey, white.

Oil pastel technique
Sunday 9 October

Picture
Tutor: Wendy Leach
Date: Sunday, 9 October
Time: 10.00am - 4.00pm
Max: 8 people
Cost: $5.00 per person

In this workshop I will introduce you to a technique using oil pastels with a gouache wash. I developed this technique some years ago when I travelled to France and Italy to paint, as it involves portable materials and is easy to work with out-of-doors. It is an enjoyable technique which is based on the principle that oily pastels and water based paint don’t mix, and brings strong, vibrant results.

If you’re an artist who has been interested in trying oil pastels, now is your chance to Give it a Go!

Tea and coffee provided, we can go to Bennetts for lunch

Tutor: Elena Nikolaeva
Cost:  $55
Number limit:  10

Being artists, we must keep exploring different painting materials and surfaces. This workshop gives you an exciting opportunity to have creative fun with oil pastels and more.

Oil pastels are known in the painting world for a long time. But the creative world is in constant movement, and artists today are exploring the possibilities and limits of oil pastels and finding more and more interesting ways to use them – either solo or in combination with other artistic materials.

In this workshop you will play with oil pastels in contemporary ways, learning what are the technical and artistic limits of oil pastels, what you can do with a surface of your painting before or after applying oil pastels, how you can combine them with other materials (acrylics, charcoal...). During this workshop you will create a painting on medium size canvas, combining oil pastels with acrylics and charcoal. You will try blending oil pastels using odourless turps. Elena will guide you through the creative process step by step, making your classes enjoyable.

- acrylics
- medium size canvas
- your favourite brushes
- charcoal
- palettes

Subtractive charcoal drawings
Images sourced from the internet
Subtractive Charcoal Drawing, 9.30 - 4.30pm, Saturday 31 July
Full day workshop with a 45 minute break for lunch, and coffee breaks.

Tutor: Wendy Leach
Maximum participants: 12 (sorry, class is full)
Cost: $100, includes all art materials which will be provided for you to keep and take home.
*Also includes the use of Wendy Leach's original photographs to be used as visual references for your drawing.
*See note below

Description: This workshop focuses on the technique of subtractive charcoal drawing, an expressive and dramatic drawing technique. Subtractive drawing is a really interesting way of working with charcoal and it can teach you a lot about tonal value (light and dark). Subtractive (also called reductive) means ‘taking away’. We work on Fabriano art paper with both willow charcoal and compressed charcoal. Charcoal is put on the paper, covering it, then is taken away with a kneaded eraser, and other types of rubbers, which you use as your drawing tools. You will be drawing with your erasers, removing charcoal to create dramatic, atmospheric drawings.

Sorry, not suitable for beginners, but other artists of all levels should enjoy this workshop. Please check with me if it will be suitable for you.

What to bring:
Bring lunch and a drink. Tea and coffee are provided for morning and afternoon tea.
All materials are paid for in your class fee.

You will get quite dirty so wear old clothes.

* note: if you think you might exhibit your charcoal drawings please bring your own original photographs to work from.

Tutor: Elena Nikolaeva

Cost: $55
Bring your own lunch.

How to express yourself in the best way in your art?
How to find your own unique and recognisable style?

To explore these questions, we will look back and study the answers developed by different artists of the 20th century -- representatives of three well-known historical styles: abstract expressionism, impressionism and cubism.
Studying these three major styles of the 20th century in practice, you will see how famous artists moved from copying nature to transforming it in their own unique ways.
In this workshop you will paint 3 small landscapes based on the same photographic image.  Using the general approaches and painting techniques of these 3 famous historical styles, you will infuse these 3 paintings with your own personal artistic touches, seeking what resonates best with your own nature. You will learn which directions are the most appealing to you and how to proceed further in developing your own way of painting.

Materials:
--acrylics or oils,
--brushes of various sizes,
--3small canvases (the sizes you are comfortable with),
--a photograph of a landscape (optional),
-- a couple of pieces of paper and a pencil for sketching,

This course is the second set of classes for beginners. It consists of six classes during which you will widen your knowledge about mixing paints and colour coordination.

Colour is the main element of painting. It is based on laws of human visual perception on the one hand and on rules and tricks of mixing paints on the other.

During this course you will learn how to achieve colour harmony in your painting, studying different colour palettes. You will:
  • experiment with mixing different paints to get the colour you are looking for;
  • study more about properties of acrylic paints and pigments, their types and brands;
  • learn about glazing techniques.

During this Introductory course you will paint 6 pictures on canvas (a painting per class) -- landscapes, floral compositions, still lifes -- and again you will do several exercises on primed paper.

Elena will guide you through the creative process step by step, making your classes enjoyable.
