If you wish to learn the art of floral painting in watercolour but have little or no experience with watercolours, you will need to complete my 2-day Watercolours for Beginners Course which is on 10 and 11 April 2025. It is held at the gallery workspace, at a cost of $195 - all materials are provided. Email or phone me  to register for the beginners course.
Course overview

In this 2-day watercolour course you will learn to create loose, flowing floral and informal botanical watercolour art, from the initial subject choice, composition considerations, precise pencil drawing, establishing values and contrast, creating shadows, and applying consecutive transparent layers to create depth in your artwork.

We will be exploring advanced techniques of this medium, including using masking fluid, fine brush work, line and wash, and the effect of different colour combinations. On completion you will have made at least one loose semi-abstract floral painting, and one informal botanical painting.

We will be working from photographs; you are welcome to bring your own close up pictures of your favourite flowers, I will also bring a number of different floral pictures to choose from.

You will need to bring your own watercolour materials
  • Your own preferred watercolour paper (CP or fine, minimum size A4)
  • Brushes (2 different sized mops, a round brush, a rigger or a fine chinese calligraphy brush, and a very fine detail brush)
  • Your watercolour paints in a variety of colours (palettes and/or tubes)

Please do not bring Japanese Kuretake, gouache, or acrylic paints, as these do not have the transparent properties for the style of painting you will be learning.

You will also need to bring
  • your own sturdy board about A3 size or bigger
  • masking tape
  • kitchen towels or cloth
  • an old towel to cover the bench
  • water container
  • a mixing plate/palette
  • 2B or HB pencil
  • a normal art eraser and a kneadable eraser
  • masking fluid - Schminke is the best
  • set of waterproof ink pens
BYO lunch and anything delicious you’d
like to share around
