Working on the Negative Space of your Painting.
Tutor: Elena Nikolaeva The traditional way to paint a picture is to work from the light parts of the painting to the dark parts, paying particular attention to the main elements of the composition. But what happens if we try to paint the opposite way – from dark to light? What are the advantages of this method and why have a number of artists used it through the centuries? In this workshop you will explore these advantages. You will paint your picture from dark to light, starting with the negative space of your painting -- first developing the background, and only after that is completed, painting in the main elements. You will learn different options of negative space paintings: working on dark canvas with negative space predominantly or working on a light canvas with negative space and the main elements of your composition developing simultaneously. Materials: - Medium to big size canvas; - Acrylics; - Your favorite brushes; - Palette; - Container for water; - Cleaning material; - Photographic image (optional). "Compilation" in Contemporary Arts, Tutor: Elena Nikolaeva Saturday 13 July 1 day workshop, 5 hours, 10am - 3pm: Max number of participants - 10
"Compilation" is a distinctive approach to contemporary painting. A number of New Zealand (Rick Edmonds, Nicky Foreman, Brian Strong, Harold Coop) and international artists master it well. And it's time for us to explore it. In this workshop you will learn to look at your work from an unconventional point of view and experiment with your own ideas, images and colours. The idea of "compilation" came from collage techniques where an artist incorporated multiple layers and interpretations in the same work. Artists are using similar approaches in painting, interpreting many aspects of a subject in a single work - a "compilation” of several different representations of the elements of a study. In this way a shoreline, for instance, could combine the features of the shore, the horizon, rocks, grasses, viewed from different angles and proximities. You will learn how and what to combine and what best to avoid in your composition. You will make sketches of your ideas and choose the most promising composition, guided by the tutor. Cost $50. (byo lunch) Materials to bring: Canvas - medium to big size (the size you are comfortable with), several sheets of ordinary printing paper A4 (better A3), a pencil, acrylics (oils), brushes, and all your favourite painting gear, photographic images (optional).
