Suzanne Simpson
The power of visual storytelling compelled me into my chosen creative path. I graduated from my 3-year Fine Art course (majoring in Illustration) at The Foundation School of Art in South Africa with two published children's books under my belt.
For 28 years, I have been illustrating children’s pictures books and educational readers, my latest being an Oratia Books series called Nanny Mihi’s Medicine and Nanny Mihi’s Harvest. Other publishers I have collaborated with include Maskew Miller Longman, Cambridge University Press, READ, Scholastic, Cengage Learning, Wendy Pye Publishers, Gilt Edge and Weldon Owen, amongst others. |
Today, my job titles include Fine Artist, Illustrator, Digital Artist and Project Manager at SS Creative Studios. Many of my oil paintings have been sold by word of mouth or through www.sscreativestudios.com with work selling at Morgan Street Gallery, Artport and Depot Gallery in Auckland.
Driven by a desire to create art that people can connect with and enjoy, I create works that feel alive, are visually engaging and thought-provoking. Done through the use of vibrant colours, layered textures and carefully considered compositions. Whether creating works of art with oil paint or digitally created character illustrations, I aim to capture the energy and clarity in each piece, which will allow viewers to connect to my work and also leave with a memory of it.
My latest body of oil paintings are influenced by water and the beauty that lies therein. Did you know that looking at water is therapeutic, improving your mental health and reducing your blood pressure…even if it’s a painting? Water certainly has that effect on me. As a child I was nicknamed Suzy Submarine, because of the many hours a day I was in it in Zimbabwe, and because I tried my hardest at 4 years old to master underwater backstroke!
I also have an affinity for all things beautiful and shiny, a magpie of sorts if you like, including the wonderful narrative we get from flora, specifically gorgeous peonies.
