Susanne Khouri

I am an immigrant from Sweden. The landscape in my new country is a source of interest and immense pleasure for me. In many ways it is like getting to know and bonding with a human being. It takes time.
Now that I have been here a while, I am seeing things with different eyes, from when I first began to look around. I know now that the bonding process has something to do with memories. The memories that you create, living in a place for a long time.
My training as an artist has taken me from many years of part time study to a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Auckland University, where I majored in Printmaking. I have established my own studio and exhibit mostly once a year.
I use a combination of techniques, mostly Aquatint plates, which allow me a subtlety of tonal variations and Screen-printing as a way of using imagery. The colours that I use has something to do with my Swedish hardwiring. Tones of grey infuse the bright colours of New Zealand.
I read a lot and sometimes the things that I come across in my reading give me food for thought and inspiration for the subject matter in my work. Often my work is semi-abstract, relying on metaphors to describe what I want to say.
