Patricia Mortensen

I am one of the founding members of the Dargaville Arts Association and in recent years I have also been a member of Mangawhai Artists Inc. I studied under MAI tutor Elena Nikolaeva. I have enjoyed working with children's workshops during the past couple of years because I really believe that is where all our creativity starts - with children having the permission to play outside the box so to say.
The word eclectic suits me as an artist in both subject and materials. In the end I am an experimental artist and have therefore travelled the path of lots of fun, mess, happy mistakes, and have copious amounts of stuff I see potential in. Somewhere I have seen a statement: 'Mixed media, mixed media - how do I love thee? Let me count the ways'. I add to that 'hopefully no-one will notice how many ways, and how much media I have to mix!'
I grew up learning to sew, knit and crochet and it was logical to me to learn to create my own fabrics with fabric dyeing and surface design. This grew into a cottage industry for some years in Auckland - and I became involved in fashion shows and exhibitions to raise funds for charities and community organisations.
On shifting to Dargaville I downsized to creating paua and pink mussell shell jewellery, and along the way dabbled with clay in the form of garden art. Alongside all of these pursuits has always been my musical involvement and to that end my husband and I started the successful monthly Acoustic Blackboard Concert as part of the performing arts side of the Dargaville Arts Association.
My path has now taken me to painting on canvas and sometimes reverse painting on glass, and in fact - anything could be my canvas if I see potential in it. I keep meaning to focus on the one thing but............the muse keeps interfering.
