Melanie Rodriga

Painting
Alongside my career as a film-maker in Australia and New Zealand, I have always painted. I first painted at high school in Sydney, where I studied art for six years and went to summer school or private classes continually, encouraged by my mother’s love of painting. Since then I have worked in screen printing, applique, tempera, acrylics, painted fabric and for the past few years, oils.
Recently I have studied with Peter Walker at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Perth and Min Woo Bang at the Croydon Art Studio in Sydney. I am now studying with Elena Nikolaeva in Mangawhai.
Currently I am painting the Otamatea area of the Kaipara Harbour where I have lived on and off for over twenty years. The line and form of its landscapes, skylines and water and the way the light makes these continually morph and change is captivating. Although the outer form of this is spectacular I find the conflation of land, sky and sea almost fathomless and I have a strong desire to imbue my work with empathy for its deep spirituality — I hope my images are a representation, not only of the harbour’s atmospheric and etheric character but of its timeless and yet impermanent qualities.
