Winter Workshop Programme. Saturday 9 June until Sunday 5 August 2018 The first week of the Winter Workshop Programme gives a taste of what will be an enriching and stimulating eight weeks in Mangawhai Artists Gallery. Elena Nikolaeva, well known for her stimulating workshops and skill and positivity as a tutor is offering ‘Aerial Perspective in Landscape Painting’, this is a one day workshop and is the first of four that Elena will lead in this package of workshops. A three day ‘Mosaics with Found Objects’ workshop, Friday to Sunday, will be taught by Pat George who with over 30 years as a ceramic artists is hooked on the challenges and inspiration possible with modern mosaic art.
Beginning Saturday 9 June, Mangawhai Artists Inc are using their gallery for workshops during the winter months. The programme of creative workshops has lots of variety and opportunities to learn in a supportive environment. There are 13 workshops plus demonstrations and other occasions to learn new things as well as to develop your own art knowledge and skills. There are half day, whole day, weekend and weekday options. Workshops on drawing, painting, mosaics and more, with six days of printmaking to chose from. The tutors are all practising artists and experienced tutors. Print week, 14-19 July, provides several opportunities to explore various printmaking techniques, with participants able to choose workshops; collagraph, lino cut, monotype and drypoint. The six day programme is being run by Wendy Clifford, Nicola Everett and Lynn Middleton. There will be a variety of printing presses available and the final two days are for self managed printing with tutor support. Lynn explains, ‘we hope that people will come and try out different techniques and then on the last couple of days take the opportunity to print an edition of a print, perhaps 5-10 copies or develop one of their own printing plates in a variety of ways’. Other highlights of the Winter Workshop programme include charcoal and pastel drawing with Wendy Clifford, dramatic drawing with Wendy Leach, exploring colour with Lynn Middleton, a one day silver clay workshop led by Jenny Crundwell and Gayle Forster is leading an opportunity for those interested in understanding the process of creating a series of artworks. Saturdays are busy days at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery. The gallery sits at the heart of the Mangawhai Village Saturday Market. Mangawhai Artists Winter Workshops have planned some drop in events for Saturday mornings (no bookings are required). There is a free workshop by Carol Marianne of Plastic Free Mangawhai so people can make their own t-shirt shopping bags and customise it with a print (Saturday 30 June). There will be demonstrations of artists at work who will be keen to talk to people about their processes for making art and being creative (Saturday 9 June and 21 July). ‘Fish Print’, a repeat of last’s years’ most popular fundraiser; choose your fish, choose your paper and PRINT (Saturday 23 July). Nicola Everett, of Mangawhai Artists Inc is coordinating the programme, ‘we have something for all levels of experience, workshops are suitable for beginners, you only need an urge to learn and play. Our tutors are experienced artists and teachers and welcome people new to art or returning to art. With the range on offer there is plenty for more experienced artists as well – this is an opportunity to try something new and be creative’’.
