Katy Carter

Katy Carter's first language is movement, then art. Katy attended Elam in the mid 80's, obsessed with photography, paint, and film making. Thwarted by early traumatic life events, feeling unsupported, under-resourced, and daunted by self-doubt within the overtly patriarchal fine art system, Katy left before completing.
Still curious, and hungry for intellectual growth, Katy went on to graduate in Art History and Languages, a Post-Grad in Film, and later an Architecture Honours Degree in London. Over a decade and a half, Katy imbibed a feast of diverse visual arts, in the rich creative international milieu of London life, and the historic and contemporary art collections of many other European cities. Professionally, Katy worked in film and television, and subsequently as an interior architect in London.
Over time, Katy slowly circled back to reclaim her own art practice, expression, and her own voice. Katy had left Aotearoa to discover who she could be, and returned to heal who she always was.
Katy contributed to a queer group show "Faerie Tales" in the Auckland Photography Festival in 2012, with a series entitled "The Architecture of Happiness". She has since completed further studies in photography, painting and pottery, at Unitec, Browne School of Art, and Auckland Studio Potters. Katy is currently designing her own studio to pursue full time art practice.
Her work is influenced by a broad range of visual and poetic interests and experiences, cultural references and personal politics, embodied movement research and spiritual enquiry, and reflects the burgeoning nature of her own heart: bold, unique, expressive and ever more courageous.

Painting predominantly in abstract acrylics, Katy was inspired to explore something more fluid and spontaneous for this series. Experimenting with acrylic pouring (fluid art) as a new technique to her, Katy discovered that the fluid process allows more freedom and spontaneity to express a confluence of thematic influences and curiosities.
A deep fondness for colour, harmony, chaos, movement, inspiration from the natural and the numinous, from the micro to the macro, and beauty in the unexpected, have all coincided to produce this work. Underpinning the works lie the intersectional pathways that have preoccupied Katy for some years; spiritual enquiry into the nature of self, embodied and emotional intelligence, and the internal experience and external wrestle between repression/expression of trauma.
