Howard Esler
Howard joined the committee in 2022 and was elected chair in 2024. For the past 30 years, Howard has owned a property in Mangawhai, but it wasn’t until he got his gold card a few years ago that he decided to settle here full-time—and he’s been loving it ever since.
Sculpting has been a lifelong passion for Howard, with rusty steel as his preferred medium. As a mechanical engineer by trade, he sees little difference between art and engineering, viewing them as two sides of the same coin. His interests extend to visual arts in general, with a particular focus on recycling and upcycling, conservation, engineering history, natural history, steampunk, pub quizzes, Trackies, and much more. Dedicated to passing on his skills to anyone eager to learn, Howard is a strong advocate for encouraging others to do the same. He firmly believes that putting a washing machine 30 feet up a tree is perfectly normal—and can passionately debate the topic for hours if needed. |
