Are you someone who claims they “can’t draw a straight line”? Or “can only draw stick figures”? Or maybe you’d just like to be able to draw a bit more realistically?
Perhaps you’ve been painting for years but never really learned how to draw?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

In this workshop you will learn how to use basic materials to produce line drawings, to study tonal modelling using light, shade and contrasts, and to find out how to reproduce recognisable objects. This can lead on to still life, landscapes, buildings and natural objects all around us.

Materials will be provided
Good quality (Staedtler, Faber Castell, reeves, jasart etc.) of the following:
at least three pencils: choose from - HB, B,2B,4B,6B etc. (you can get boxed sets), A4 or A3 drawing pad/visual diary, soft eraser, pencil sharpener or small craft knife

Optional: An object from home that you’d like to draw if there’s time.

In this introduction to collagraphic printing I shall be demonstrating how to make various types of collagraphic plates from which you can print. Think collage.

You will then be able to print from plates that I have prepared earlier, experimenting with different ways of inking up the same plate.

This is only an introduction to this method, as it takes more than a couple of hours to prepare a plate (drying time is required) However this is an exciting and versatile method of printing which can be a starting point for painting or over drawing.

Subtractive charcoal drawings
Images sourced from the internet
Subtractive Charcoal Drawing, 9.30 - 4.30pm, Saturday 31 July
Full day workshop with a 45 minute break for lunch, and coffee breaks.

Tutor: Wendy Leach
Maximum participants: 12 (sorry, class is full)
Cost: $100, includes all art materials which will be provided for you to keep and take home.
*Also includes the use of Wendy Leach's original photographs to be used as visual references for your drawing.
*See note below

Description: This workshop focuses on the technique of subtractive charcoal drawing, an expressive and dramatic drawing technique. Subtractive drawing is a really interesting way of working with charcoal and it can teach you a lot about tonal value (light and dark). Subtractive (also called reductive) means ‘taking away’. We work on Fabriano art paper with both willow charcoal and compressed charcoal. Charcoal is put on the paper, covering it, then is taken away with a kneaded eraser, and other types of rubbers, which you use as your drawing tools. You will be drawing with your erasers, removing charcoal to create dramatic, atmospheric drawings.

Sorry, not suitable for beginners, but other artists of all levels should enjoy this workshop. Please check with me if it will be suitable for you.

What to bring:
Bring lunch and a drink. Tea and coffee are provided for morning and afternoon tea.
All materials are paid for in your class fee.

You will get quite dirty so wear old clothes.

* note: if you think you might exhibit your charcoal drawings please bring your own original photographs to work from.

Finding Your Artistic Style - Wednesday 7 July 2021,  10.00am - 3.30pm,

Tutor: Elena Nikolaeva

Cost: $55
Bring your own lunch.

How to express yourself in the best way in your art?
How to find your own unique and recognisable style?

To explore these questions, we will look back and study the answers developed by different artists of the 20th century -- representatives of three well-known historical styles: abstract expressionism, impressionism and cubism.
Studying these three major styles of the 20th century in practice, you will see how famous artists moved from copying nature to transforming it in their own unique ways.
In this workshop you will paint 3 small landscapes based on the same photographic image.  Using the general approaches and painting techniques of these 3 famous historical styles, you will infuse these 3 paintings with your own personal artistic touches, seeking what resonates best with your own nature. You will learn which directions are the most appealing to you and how to proceed further in developing your own way of painting.

Materials:
--acrylics or oils,
--brushes of various sizes,
--3small canvases (the sizes you are comfortable with),
--a photograph of a landscape (optional),
-- a couple of pieces of paper and a pencil for sketching,
-- palette,
--container for water,
--cleaning material.
