‘I cannot recall a time when I was not making stuff, drawing, painting and day dreaming ‘
I am a professional artist with a focus on painting and drawing; my practice has evolved over thirty years and continues to engage me. My approach to art making is highly experimental; I am always interested in playing with a new idea or material. Art Education has been a major focus for me; from 2000-2014 I held a Senior Academic position at Auckland’s Unitec in the Department of Design and Visual Arts. My teaching experience is broad from supervision of Masters students to incoming Certificate students. I now reside permanently in Mangawhai and have managed to build a large, stand-alone professional arts studio, which I share with students on a continual basis. I love making art and I enjoy sharing my experience and enthusiasm with others.
I am interested in creating paintings that bring together a wide multiplicity of sources into a coherent - and sometimes discordant - whole. My paintings feed off the history of the decorative, and abstraction. A jumble of sources including collaged materials are arranged to create or reconstruct a world within the painting, in which a new kind of sense is made - one in which the everyday the mundane can become beautiful, celebratory, somehow special. My art works tend to be overly embellished and highly decorated. In the mode of an obsessive homemaker I am visually ‘over catering’ to ensure there is never ‘not enough’. My challenge is to forge a pictorial interior landscape in which anything (and everything) can be included, and that celebrate its own logic.
