Heather Carrigan
New Zealand Flax (Harakeke)
Nestled in the Tangowahine Valley is a Pā Harakeke*. It's the engine room of a workshop and gallery created by fibre artist Heather Carrigan.
Heather has been weaving New Zealand Flax (Harakeke/Korari) for 4 years, under the tutorage of Veranoa Hetet through the Hetet School of Maori Art.
Colour play and usefulness are passions that underpin Heather's works, be it the natural subtilties afforded by the many cultivars of Harakeke or bright and vibrant dyed materials. Many traditional techniques are demonstrated in Heather's mahi and upholding tradition and tikanga of Maori Flax weaving is her main inspiration.
Heather won the Judges Merit award in the 3D section of the 2016 Kaipara Art Awards and more recently she won the Moananui section of the 2018 Dargaville Wearable Arts Awards.
* A pā harakeke is a planting of selected varieties of harakeke (New Zealand flax), chosen for their muka (fibre) or raranga (weaving/plaiting) qualities.
Cultivating harakeke is a way to ensure vigorous, healthy bushes that will provide high quality leaf material for weaving.
Flax and Fibre - Workshop 4494 State Highway 14, Tangowahine. Open by appointment.
